    Tour the U.S. Navy's newest destroyer while she is docked in Whittier for commissioning week. Public tours of the USS Ted Stevens (DDG 128) run Wednesday, September 30 and Thursday, October 1, from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM each day, with the last tour at 4:30 PM. The ship is moored at the Whittier Cruise Terminal, the Princess Cruises dock. Tours are limited and advance registration is required through the USS Ted Stevens Commissioning Committee. Groups over 20 should email joinus@usstedstevens.org. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the only road into Whittier, so check the tunnel schedule before you head down.

    The U.S. Navy commissions its newest destroyer, the USS Ted Stevens (DDG 128), in Whittier on Saturday, October 3 at noon. It is the first Navy ship commissioning in Alaska since 2013. The Flight III Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer is named for Sen. Ted Stevens, the decorated World War II pilot who represented Alaska in the U.S. Senate for four decades. The roughly 90-minute ceremony closes with the crew running aboard to man the ship, the moment she officially joins the fleet. Ticket holders only. The commissioning committee has reached capacity and is no longer accepting ticket requests. The Whittier Tunnel is closed to private vehicles on October 3. All guests check in at the Dena'ina Center in Anchorage (East Door) and travel to Whittier by motorcoach or Alaska Railroad as booked. The first bus leaves at 8:00 AM and the last at 9:30 AM, and the ride takes about 1.5 hours. Parking is free at the 6th Avenue EasyPark Garage, 700 West 6th Avenue, and the 7th Avenue EasyPark Garage, 650 G Street. Every guest is screened in Whittier, so travel light and plan for airport-style security. Small or clear stadium bags are preferred. No guns, knives, or flammables.
