FrostBoard operates Alaska's verified marketplace, and our firearms policy is built on top of Alaska state law and federal firearms regulations. Alaska is one of the most permissive states for lawful firearm ownership, but "permissive" doesn't mean "no rules." Here's how our policy maps to the law.
Private Sales in Alaska
Alaska does not require background checks on private firearm sales between Alaska residents. Federal law still applies: it remains a federal crime to knowingly sell a firearm to a prohibited person, to ship a handgun across state lines without an FFL, or to sell to someone you have reasonable cause to believe is prohibited from possessing firearms.
FrostBoard does not facilitate sales. Buyers and sellers complete the transaction in person. We require ID verification on every firearms listing so both parties know who they're dealing with before meeting.
Prohibited Persons
Federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922(g)) prohibits firearm possession by anyone who has been convicted of a felony, is subject to a domestic-violence restraining order, has been adjudicated as mentally defective, is an unlawful user of controlled substances, or falls into other enumerated categories. Selling a firearm to a known prohibited person is a federal crime regardless of state law.
By posting a firearms listing on FrostBoard, sellers attest that they will not knowingly transfer a firearm to a prohibited person. Buyers attest the same when initiating contact.
Interstate Sales
FrostBoard listings are restricted to Alaska residents. Federal law generally requires that any firearm sold across state lines be transferred through a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) in the buyer's state of residence. We do not support interstate firearm transfers on the platform.
What's Always Prohibited on FrostBoard
- Machine guns and conversion devices not lawfully registered under the National Firearms Act
- Suppressors, short-barreled rifles, or any NFA item without proof of lawful registration and an in-person FFL transfer
- Firearms with obliterated, altered, or missing serial numbers
- Stolen firearms
- Sales to anyone you reasonably believe is a prohibited person
- Listings that attempt to circumvent federal interstate-transfer law
This is a summary of how our policy interacts with Alaska and federal law. It is not legal advice. For authoritative information on Alaska gun law, see the overview at Wikipedia or consult the ATF . If you have a specific legal question, consult a licensed Alaska attorney.
